Artist's Comments

Chef/owner Junji Aoki poses for a portrait behind the sushi bar at Sushi Island in Wakefield.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I used one light behind him for that "outline" effect. His face is lit by a combination of ambient tungsten lights and a window to his right. Initially, I only meant for the strobe behind to help make him standout from the dark background, but it also had the nice side effect of lighting the inside of the sushi case in front of him. He was a very nice man who had trouble smiling for the camera, so I told a joke before every shot where I wanted him to smile. The picture was done for The Boston Globe to go with an article on local sushi restaurants - [link]

Sushi Island by ~Bostonia is a very lighthearted and down to earth portrait of a smiling sushi chef in his sushi bar. I love the mood that this shot creates. This artists gallery is full of real life images that evoke all kinds of different feelings in the viewer, definitely worth a look! (Suggested by ~Ryo-sensei and Featured by ^PorcelainPoet)

That's a rely kool shot. Did he ask you to take the shots or did you ask him?
